THE BEATLES3rdアンソロジーアルバム。87年に公式音源がCDで出揃い、93年には赤盤、青盤のCD化も完了。94年には『ON AIR - LIVE AT THE BBC』もリリースされていた中で、映像、音源、書籍で展開したアンソロジープロジェクトのうち、音源部分では3作の未発表音源集アルバムが企画された。第2弾である今作には1968年〜1970年までの未発表音源を収録。新曲収録の噂もあったが今作に新曲は収録されず、代わりにジョージ・マーティンによるインストの未発表曲が1曲目に収録された。今作自体は後に何度か再発されているもののCDにおけるリマスター再発はされていない。2011年にiTunes配信限定でリマスターされているが、CDでの現行盤はオリジナル音源のままの2013年盤のようだ。

前2作の「新曲」のポジションだった1曲目に50秒しかないプロデューサーのオーケストラインスト(「Don't Pass Me By」のイントロ用に制作して没になったとされる)というのはちょっと魅力に乏しい。色々なテイクを合体させるくらいはこのシリーズで当たり前のように行っていたんだから、10曲目の「Don't Pass Me By」と合体まではさせずとも単にその前に配置すれば良かったような…。唯一の2枚組30曲入りアルバムだったという事もあるにしても今作はDISC-1いっぱい使って『The Beatles』(ホワイトアルバム)の時期の音源に費やしているのもちょっと多すぎるように感じた。デモ音源やリハーサルテイクがそれだけ多かったということなんだろうけど…。ソロで後に発表される曲がビートルズ時代に没になっていたというのは面白いところだけどソロ曲まではまだチェックできてないのでそこのところの面白みは分からなかった。

フィル・スペクターによる装飾が外された「The Long And Winding Road」や、屋上ライブの「Get Back」などDISC-2は当初のコンセプトに沿ったゲットバックセッションの雰囲気が感じられるのがポイントだけどこれも他は思ったよりもラフなデモ音源が多い感じで…。ゲットバックセッションをまとめようとして制作された『Get Back』が2度も完成度の低さを理由に発売中止になって、結局フィル・スペクターが手を入れて『Let It Be』になった…というのもなんとなく分からないでもない。何より後に発売される『Let It Be...Naked』の方が今作の音源よりまとまっていて音もいいような…。このせいもあって割と別バージョン的にも聞くことができた『Anthology 2』よりもいかにもデモっぽい曲が多くてちょっと物足りなかった。
