Eaglesベストアルバム。本国アメリカでは2000年の『Selected Works: 1972〜1999』以来4作目。日本含めた各国では1994年の『The Very Best of the Eagles』(01年曲順を入れ替えて再発)も含めて5作目となるベスト盤。デビューから94年の再結成時までから時系列に収録。7月にDVDシングルでリリースされていた久々の新曲「Hole in the World」がラストに収録された。この曲は次のオリジナルアルバムにも収録された。
本国アメリカとその他各国では今作はジャケットデザインこそ同一だが完全に別タイトルで発売されている。
本国アメリカのみ『The
Very Best of』のタイトルで発売。これは94年の『The
Very Best of the Eagles』がアメリカでは発売されていなかったためと思われる。
その他各国では『The
Complete Greatest Hits』のタイトルで発売。イギリス、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドなど94年に『The
Very Best of the Eagles』が発売されていて被るためと思われる。
日本では『ベスト・コレクション』のタイトルで発売された。日本でも『The
Very Best of the Eagles』は発売されていたためか、日本盤のベースとなっているのは各国仕様の『The
Complete Greatest Hits』となっている。
ブックレットにはDon Henley、Glenn Freyによる対談形式での全曲解説が掲載されている。シングルのみだった「Please Come Home for Christmas」はアルバム初収録。初回盤は「Hole in the World」のビデオクリップ、メイキング、ツアーのバックステージを収録したDVD付。
クレジットでは歴代全メンバーが特に区分け無く表記されている。Bernie Leadonは4thアルバム『One of These Nights』までで脱退、Randy Meisnerは5thアルバム『Hotel California』までで脱退、Don Felderは3rdアルバム『On the Border』に一部参加した後に正式に加入、Joe Walshは5thアルバム『Hotel California』から加入、Timothy B.Schmitは6thアルバム『The Long Run』で加入。1994年の再結成時のメンバーは解散時メンバーと同じDon Henley、Glenn Frey、Don Felder、Joe Walsh、Timothy B.Schmitの5人だったが、00年にDon Felderが解雇された事で今作時のメンバーはDon Henley、Glenn Frey、Joe Walsh、Timothy B.Schmitの4人となっていて新曲「Hole in the World」もこの4人編成での制作となっている。
現役時代唯一にして最大のヒット作『Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975』、解散時の『Greatest Hits Volume 2』があったが、CD以降では主に94年の『The Very Best of the Eagles』が決定版となっていて、日本でも現在中古屋に行けばこれか最初にCD化された際の旧盤『Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975』が必ず置いてあるくらい出回っているが、アメリカでは正式に発売されていないもので、00年の『Selected Works 1972-1999』は4枚組BOX扱いだったので、再結成94年も含めて時系列で一気に振り返る2枚組ベストとなった今作は本国アメリカ基準でのいわゆる初のオールタイムベスト的な決定盤。アルバムによっては半分以上選曲されていたりもするのでやや選びすぎな感じはあるものの、これ以降のベスト盤乱発も無く、一撃完結型のベスト盤としても分かりやすくて手に取りやすい。メンバー解説がついているのも親切設計だ。Ted Jensenのリマスターもガツンとして迫力のある音で往年の名曲を楽しむことができる。今作は時系列なのでバンドの歴史を辿っていけるのも魅力だが、こういう企画で外されがちな再結成以降や新曲まで入っていたり、当時クリスマス向けシングルオンリーでリリースされてオリジナルアルバム未収録だった「Please Come Home for Christmas」もさらっと収録されているのもポイント。
